Dressing Down

I know...I know...
a lot of you probably think this is pretty ugly.
I couldn't say the same for myself, however.

When Alexa Chung wore this ensemble
to the 2012 Met Ball,
I found it to be quite strange
in the best of ways.

See, I'm all about finding different
and unexpected ways to style clothing.
And this suited my criteria perfectly.

So here, you take this dress
from the Marc Jacobs Fall 2012 collection...
with it's seductive shape and sultry leather fabric,
it's quite femme fatale:

...but then you throw this mannish white blouse
underneath it and button the thing all the way up.

Now,
I'm not one for inserting $5.00 words
in order to give the effect that I'm
well-spoken or anything...
but my gosh, the juxtaposition!
It's so...so odd.
But it works, IMO.
In fact, I rather like it.

This, dear reader,
is a prime example of taking a fancy piece
and doing my favourite thing of all: dressing down.
Like I always say, be unexpected.
If there's another way you can wear something
other than how one would normally style it,
do it.

Here's the actual dress on the actual runway:

So...
they're both similarly styled,
with the exception of the print
(and Mad Hatter hat, leprechaun shoes,
and furry-ass bag).

If any one of you are daring enough
to rock something like this
but are still uneasy about the whole thing,
I would suggest wearing
a blouse with slimmer sleeves,
making the silhouette
less boxy and pouffy,
and more streamlined.

And if you look closer,
Ms. Chung's "mannish"
button-down also has
a dainty peter pan collar,
consequently giving
a bit of a feminine touch.

Remember,
Those little details are
really important when you're
trying to...you know,
juxtapose stuff.

- Leira

(But seriously...is anyone actually considering doing this?)

  1. I am still torn if I like it or not. Alexa wears it well and I like the white blouse more than the runway look. What I just can't get used to is the cut/fabric. It looks so bulky and like it doesn't fit. But I still love Alexa!!

  6. It looks great on Alexa! I can't picture myself in it, but maybe if I would be a little older and I would've already totally find my own style... ;)

  7. I think this is one of those things that you like more once you take a moment to inspect it a little closer.

At first, I was hesitant - but it's growing on me.
